Resveratrol is a stilbene (polyphenol) that belongs to the phytoalexin family and is found in red grapes, red cherries, peanuts, pomegranates, berries and red wine. According to preliminary studies, taking resveratrol can lead to an improvement in learning and memory processes .
Compared to the placebo group, 200 mg of resveratrol daily for 26 weeks significantly improved cognitive function (word retention) and cerebral blood flow in healthy adults.
A meta-analysis of 6 RCT studies showed that increased fish consumption was associated with a 36% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, for every 100g increase in weekly fish consumption, the risk of Alzheimer’s disease dropped by 11%.
Astaxanthin, at doses of 9-12 mg per day for 12 weeks, also improved cognitive function in healthy middle-aged individuals who complained of mild memory loss. In a separate study, taking lutein (12 mg / day), DHA (800 mg / day) or a combination of both improved learning efficiency, verbal fluency and cognition in older women.
However, other intervention studies in Alzheimer’s disease patients have shown inconsistent results. Based on these conflicting results, omega-3 supplementation could be useful in a preventive key and in subjects with mild cognitive decline associated with age or with very early Alzheimer’s disease, while it could be poorly effective in cases of dementia clinically diagnosed.
